I’ve finally settled into my house enough to the point where I want to “make it my own”. You know… add flair… a custom touch.
I don’t think I’ve ever done this to a place I’ve lived. Almost my entire adult life I’ve either been in government quarters, renting, or in a place where I had no say in the way things were.
Then again, I don’t think I ever had much desire to decorate. There might be one exception… When I was 5 or so, and I saw an episode of the Ellory Queen Sunday Night Mystery that had a house with a huge Lionel train layout. It even had trains going through walls to other parts of the house, delivering things!
This really sparked my imagination at the time. I had a couple of trains that size (O gauge, for those that fancy such things), thanks to my parents. I had no idea how expensive they were. I hope I was suitably grateful…. Anyway, there were always some sort of adult reasons why we couldn’t do the same. I eventually grew out of that notion. Perhaps that’s a little sad, though inevitable (or is it…).
Back to the present. I semi-consciously developed themes for my bathrooms (I have two of them). Both are ocean themed, thanks to some purchases from Temu and finds at GoodWill. The guest bath is mostly dark aquamarine and bronze, with octopi. My master bathroom is aquamarine and gold, with mermaids. My bathroom is without towel racks, while the guest bath has one flimsy chrome rack. I wanted an upgrade. I’m doing the guest bathroom first, to see how it looks and learn from its installation so I can do a better job on the master bath. I’ll re-use the chrome rack for my bathroom in the meantime.

A quick online search showed that if you want anything special, towel racks are somewhat expensive ($15 – $35+). Also, none have the look I want. They all look a bit flimsy; I want something that looks as you can do chin-ups with it. Practical, no, but I like what I like.
I’m going to make my racks out of metal piping. Maybe iron, maybe copper… whichever is cheaper. I’ll spray paint them bronze. PVC would probably be cheaper and easier to install, but I’m worried about the paint wearing off and exposing the plastic underneath. I’m probably overthinking things; after all, it’s not as if the bathroom gets all that much use. Whatever.
Part Two will have materials and prep. Part Three will be about the installation.
